Meet the Maker: Glengarry Fine Cheese

Meet the Maker: Glengarry Fine Cheese. Margaret Peter-Morris’ family history is a big part of her success. Margaret is the founder/owner at Glengarry Fine Cheese, situated on her family’s ancestral lands in the corner of South Glengarry Township on the shores of the St. Lawrence River. Drawing on her Dutch heritage, Margaret began making cheese back in the 1990s. The milk that goes into her artisan cheese comes from the Holstein herd across the road, and the Peters family feed the herd from hay, grass and grains from their property. Though Margaret has a particular liking for and makes several flavours of gouda, Glengarry Fine Cheese produces several delicious cheese varieties, including:   The award-winning Lankaaster is a firm Dutch-style cheese with a slightly open texture. This cheese is made in a traditional, historic Dutch style, just as farmers would have done in days of yore.  Absolutely delicious!

The Fleur-en-Lait, a washed rind cheese related to the French St-Paulin. This is a semi-soft cheese with a delicate but robust sweet and fruity flavour.                 Bridge End Camembert Style cheese is made from full fat cow milk and has a soft, bloomy rind.

Celtic Blue Reserve is a blue cheese with delicate veining and a buttery aroma. The latter variety is enriched with cream.

Margaret continually develops her cheesemaking skills and experiments with making new varieties. In addition to producing cheese, Margaret also runs Glengarry Cheesemaking Supply Inc, which provides other cheesemakers with supplies, equipment and technical support in cheese making. Margaret and the staff and Glengarry Fine Cheese truly pour their love of cheesemaking into every batch of artisan cheese they produce. When Margaret and her family aren’t making cheese, you can usually find them in the garden, riding horses or tending to animals on the farm. What an idyllic life, lived on the shores of St. Lawrence! Mrs. McGarrigle’s “Meet the Maker” series celebrates local food producers who care about making high-quality food products with locally and/or ethically sourced ingredients.
